Gear inspection converts tooth geometry into measurable evidence. Ondrives combines analytical gear measurement with CMM and optical inspection so tooth form and the surrounding component geometry can be assessed together.

What can be measured

Depending on gear type and drawing requirements, inspection can include profile deviation, lead or helix deviation, pitch variation, runout, tooth thickness and other characteristics defined by the applicable gear standard.

Quality standards

The drawing should state the governing standard and required quality grade wherever possible. This avoids ambiguity and ensures manufacturing and inspection use the same acceptance basis.

Some programmes require dimensional reports, gear charts, material certification and traceability. These requirements are best agreed before production because they influence inspection planning and documentation.

Design for inspection

Clear datums, accessible reference surfaces and unambiguous tooth definitions make both production and final verification more robust. Inspection access should be considered when designing complex geared shafts and compound parts.

What analytical gear inspection tells you

Gear inspection separates different sources of flank and indexing error. Reporting profile, lead, pitch and runout individually gives more engineering information than a single dimensional check.

Profile

Profile measurement evaluates the tooth flank in the involute direction and can verify slope/form errors together with specified tip/root relief or other profile modification.

Lead

Lead measurement evaluates the flank across the face width. It can verify helix/lead accuracy, crowning and end relief and highlight alignment-related manufacturing effects.

Pitch and runout

Pitch checks tooth-to-tooth indexing while runout indicates eccentricity or datum relationship. They should be interpreted with the specified quality standard and inspection datum.

Quality grades are standard-specific. Do not compare grade numbers without naming the standard because numbering systems are not interchangeable. Define whether a certificate, FAIR, material traceability or detailed analytical report is required at quotation stage.
