Gear grinding is used where tighter control of tooth geometry, surface finish and load distribution is required. Ondrives combines grinding with analytical inspection so the finished tooth form can be measured against the drawing and intended microgeometry.

Profile and lead modification

Published Ondrives capability includes profile and lead changes such as tip or root relief, profile crowning, lead crowning and end relief. These modifications are used when the application requires controlled contact behaviour rather than a nominal unmodified flank.

Profile, lead, pitch and runout information provide the feedback required to verify the finished gear. For development work, inspection results can also support controlled adjustment of the manufacturing process.

When grinding may be appropriate

Grinding is commonly considered after heat treatment, where higher accuracy, controlled tooth flank finish, transmission behaviour or defined microgeometry are required. The correct route depends on the complete component and duty rather than quality grade alone.

Profile, lead and finishing detail

Grinding can establish final flank accuracy after heat treatment and can also introduce controlled microgeometry. Those modifications must be defined deliberately and verified by analytical inspection.

Profile modification

Intentional changes along the involute can include tip relief, root relief, profile crowning or other specified corrections. They are used to manage load, deflection, noise and edge conditions rather than simply to change nominal tooth size.

Lead modification

Lead crowning and end relief alter contact across the face width. The target depends on alignment, shaft/bearing deflection, housing behaviour and load distribution.

Grinding and inspection loop

Profile, lead, pitch and runout measurements allow the process to be corrected and verified against the drawing. A quality grade should always be quoted with its governing standard.

Where a gear is ground after hardening, the drawing should make clear which datums and adjacent diameters are final before or after heat treatment, the stock allowance, required flank finish and any microgeometry.
